 September 2007

As you may already know, we here at Upstate Karate are constantly looking for better ways to develop leaders. We work to spot students that have that leadership quality and, if possible, help them cultivate that quality. We are also looking for the student that may not be a natural leader but has great desire to be one. Because of our commitment to our community, we are trying to do our part to help develop future leaders for our community. Because of this we’ve developed Upstate Karate S.W.A.T. This stands for Special. Winning. Attitude. Team. This Team up to now has been the highest and most prestigious Team in the school. Because we want to be able to recognize and offer more opportunities to our students as well as develop future martial arts leaders (potential Upstate Karate School owner/operators), we have developed two more “leadership” teams for U.K. S.T.O.R.M. Team is our NEW beginner leadership team. The Special Team Of Role Models is where the new future leader will start their service and development. This team has special duties and responsibilities that they will be required to learn and develop. Once serving there no less that one year and proving themselves, they MAY be called to S.W.A.T. Here their duties and responsibilities are more involved. Their service here will, more than likely, be long, demanding but most importantly more rewarding. Finally after mastering the S.W.A.T. duties and responsibilities, the Team member will be elevated to the level of Master S.W.A.T. This is the level we are looking to ultimately have our leaders aspire to achieve. These MASTER Team members will be the ones that, if they choose, we will look to for school owner/operators. The life of a Martial Arts School owner is very demanding but equally rewarding. The hours are long (no we do not come in at 4 pm and leave at 8 pm) but they are not the same hours as the construction worker or the laborer. Those hours are tough and hard and the environment can be unpredictable. My life is GREAT. I used to be in the construction industry as a maintenance mechanic as well as an H.V.A.C. mechanic. Once removed from that line of work and into my present line, my life changed drastically. Imagine going to work every day knowing you are going to be working with people that love for you to yell at them and make them do weird stuff. Man this job is GREAT. All kidding aside, my job is great, and as long as I have the ability I WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE. Anyway look for some new faces leading at Upstate Karate because we are already working with the leaders of the future of the Martial Arts and our communities. As always, it’s a pleasure.

Mr. T.
