Through reading and talking with Mr. Burke I soon became interested in other martial arts, in particular Aikido. At that time Aikido was very uncommon in America. So in the fall of 1974, I traveled to Japan to study. I intended to stay one year but stayed nearly four instead. I trained under Suganuma sensei one of Osenseis uchi deshi. I also had the time and opportunity to study other martial arts as well. Throughout my martial arts career, I have been blessed with good instructors. I have also made many good friends. When Mr. Thompson invited me to teach at Upstate Karate, I saw it as an excellent opportunity to teach on a wider basis. In addition to teaching I am continuing with my own personal study and training. I have traveled as far as California to attend a seminar and occasionally return to Japan where I still have many good friends.

I began martial arts training in 1972. I started by studying
Judo under the guidance of Brian Burke sensei. Mr. Burke taught the whole art not
just the techniques. I soon became enamored.
